- Australia's limited forest area is confined to the southeast, the island of Tasmania, and some coastal strips. The nation has moved to conserve many remaining areas of forest, but these are a small percentage of the forested extent prior to European incursion.
- Isolation from other landmasses over a geologic time scale has enabled numerous species seen nowhere else to evolve, giving Australia a unique biological heritage.
